About Hales Institute

MEGT, a totally Australian-owned, not-for-profit provider of education, training and employment services, was established in 1982 in Melbourne and has expanded to deliver vocational training, job placement, apprenticeships support services and education across the nation.

The Hales story

Hales has hit its hundredth birthday: Melbourne’s Hales Institute is celebrating the century since we were founded in 1910. Hales Institute is now part of MEGT’s Education Group. However, the story starts in the early 1900s when Miss Elsa Hale and her brother set up a business in Sydney, which taught mainly secretarial skills.

In the 1950s, Hale’s Business Colleges opened a campus in Melbourne.  During this period evening courses were offered in Shorthand and Typewriting. Students could complete Certificate and Diploma courses at night. Advertisements from this period boast “At atmosphere of cheerful efficiency, enhanced by modern furnishings, tasteful decoration and scientifically designed (fluorescent) lighting”

By the 1960s, training programs included a year-long full time prestigious diploma secretarial course for ‘modern business girls’, with education across a range of subjects including accountancy, together with shorter certificate courses.
But shifting educational needs by the late 1970s saw Miss Hale’s Sydney college being bought by a competitor which, eventually, dropped Miss Hale’s name.

In the 1980s, a private company bought the Melbourne Hale’s Business College and changed its name to Hales Institute and its focus to provide vocational training for international students, in business, information technology, hospitality and hairdressing.

In 2010, MEGT (Australia) Ltd acquired Hales Institute and has streamlined Hales into the college you see today. MEGT, a totally Australian-owned, not-for-profit provider of education, training and employment services, was established in 1982 in Melbourne and has expanded to deliver vocational training, job placement, apprenticeships support services and education across the nation.
