About

The Master of Counselling at Sunway University is designed to develop competent, ethical, and reflective counselling professionals equipped to support individuals, families, and communities across educational, clinical, and organisational settings. This 48-credit postgraduate programme combines structured coursework with supervised practicum and internship experiences to build strong professional counselling skills and real-world readiness.

Students gain knowledge in counselling theories, lifespan development, ethics, multicultural counselling, psychological assessment, and group counselling while applying evidence-based practices in practical settings. The programme emphasises communication, critical thinking, ethical decision-making, and cultural sensitivity, preparing graduates to work confidently with diverse populations and mental health needs.

Approved by the Board of Counsellors Malaysia (LKM), the programme prepares graduates for professional certification and registration as practising counsellors. Delivered by experienced academics and practitioners within Sunway University’s Faculty of Medical and Life Sciences, students benefit from industry exposure, collaborative learning, and practical training that supports career advancement in counselling, mental health, and community development.

Entry Requirements

Academic Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in counselling or related fields with minimum CGPA 2.50 (or equivalent) recognised by the HEP Senate
  • Candidates without a related qualification are encouraged to attend personal/professional development courses
  • Must pass an internal interview

English Language Requirements

  • IELTS 6.0, OR
  • TOEFL 550 (PBT) / 200 (CBT) / 75 (IBT), OR
  • PTE Academic 50, OR
  • MUET Band 4, OR
  • Cambridge English B2 level
  • Exempted if previous degree was taught in English
