Western Australia–Malaysia Partnership Marks 38 Years of Success

Hon Stephen Dawson MLC with Datin Paduka Sarena Cheah, representatives from Sunway Education, Invest and Trade Western Australia Kuala Lumpur, and students from Sunway College’s Australian Matriculation (AUSMAT) programme.

The Government of Western Australia, represented by the Minister for Regional Development; Ports; Science and Innovation; Medical Research; Kimberley, Hon Stephen Dawson MLC, strengthened Australia’s enduring partnership in education and innovation with Sunway Education Group through his visit to Sunway College.

A highlight of the visit was Minister Dawson’s engagement with students from the Australian Matriculation (AUSMAT) programme, which demonstrated how the Western Australian curriculum continues to inspire young Malaysians with global perspectives and essential skills. The exchange emphasised the value of international education partnerships in fostering stronger people-to-people connections between Western Australia and Malaysia.

“Western Australia and Malaysia are building a future where education continues to connect our communities, inspire our young people and drive progress,” said Hon Stephen Dawson MLC in his speech. “International students are welcomed and valued in Western Australia. They bring vibrancy, talent, and a diverse range of perspectives to our state. Education remains a key pillar of our trading relationship with Malaysia.”

Also in attendance was Datin Paduka Sarena Cheah, Executive Deputy Chair of Sunway Berhad and an AUSMAT alumna, reflecting the transformative impact of the Western Australian curriculum in shaping Sunway’s leaders and graduates.

“At Sunway, we believe in nurturing lifelong learners who make meaningful contributions to their communities and countries. To achieve this, it is crucial that we continue to offer diverse learning pathways and foster deeper cross-cultural understanding.

In this spirit, we are honoured to welcome Minister Dawson and look forward to strengthening our relationship with the Government of Western Australia, exploring new opportunities for collaboration that will benefit our students and enrich the broader educational landscape,” said Professor Dato’ Elizabeth Lee, Chief Executive Officer of Sunway Education Group.

The engagement reinforced the shared vision of Western Australia and Malaysia in championing education as a catalyst for sustainable progress and global impact. It also underscored Sunway Education Group’s leadership in sustainability, innovation, research, and education, areas closely aligned with Western Australia’s focus on applied science and innovation.

Marking 38 years of partnership, the meeting set the stage for continued partnership between Western Australia and Sunway Education Group, united in their shared purpose of cultivating talent and ideas that contribute meaningfully to global progress.
